Lincoln City, Oregon

Have spent a lovely couple of relaxing days here in Lincoln City.  It is a beautiful 7 mile long beach town, with lots of good places to eat, and lots of little touristy shops.  Their two main attractions, besides the coastal areas, is the Chinook Winds Casino and the Jennifer Sears Glass Blowing Studio.

I figured the casino had 24 hour movement, so I parked in their parking lot to sleep the first night.  The next day I found they had an RV parking lot with no hookups for free, so stayed there the next two nights.

The first full day I spent at the Road’s End Park in Lincoln City getting the van organized and tidied up. My best buddy, CJ, said it will probably be an ongoing process.... I think she is right. There are plenty of things I have brought that I won’t need so it is a good thing I am on this little trial run down the coast before I return to L-town to paint.  I can put this extra stuff in storage.  Fixed the tissue holder on the front of the console, and found that Gorilla Tape can certainly be a “girl’s best friend”!!

Also stopped by the Chamber of Commerce Tourist Bureau across from Rite-Aid to pick up info.  That should always be first on the list of things to do!  :)  Got a booklet for all down the coast also.

The day was mostly overcast, the sun breaking out around 4, but it was lovely to hear the ocean waves and get the breezes through the van as the day got warmer.

There was an Oregon Coast Fish Taco competition last weekend... so wish I could have been here!!  J's Fish and Chips here in Lincoln City won 2nd place (1st last year), so of course I had to check them out for dinner that first night.  2 tacos, coleslaw and tortilla chips for $5... can't beat that, and they were yummy!

Then I went to a movie at the historic Bijou Theatre, and saw The Big Wedding.  It was OK, but not truly great in my opinion.

Today I went to the glass blowing studio and got to see two gals take a lesson.  One made a glass float and one made a bowl.  The young lady sitting next to me told me her art class in high school near Salem had gotten a grant for a field trip to come up and all the students made floats.  These ladies were her mom and a chaperone who made their own projects while the students were getting lunch.  Glass blowing is awesome.  My phone was out of charge so I didn't get any pictures.

A memory to share with my sons - I was once offered a glass blowing apprenticeship but the shop was over 50 miles away from my home so I wasn't able to take the offer.  I have often wished I could have worked it out.

Then I went to Mo's for a bowl of their "World Famous" clam chowder.  With garlic cheese bread, it was very delicious and filling.

Spent the next 6 hours at the Starbucks in Safeway charging up everything I own that needs charging, paying bills, checking Facebook, and beginning to conduct business for my web design biz.

Things I learned today:  That Abraham Lincoln was offered the Governorship of the Oregon Territory in 1848, but he declined it.  That Nordic fishermen used glass floats a long time ago, and the Japanese only started using them in about 1910.  Also, that the first known "blown" glass vessels were created around 50BC to 14AD.

Going to look at geocaching.com for a few caches before I leave town to head south to Newport.
